If you've been wondering when Spiro's Deli is actually finishing its move off Waukegan Road, you're not the only one. The Village of Glenview announced a four-project restaurant timeline back in March, and if you were tracking it by press release, you'd think downtown was fully stocked by early summer. It isn't. One project opened close to schedule. One opened three months late this week. One had a mid-August target that has already come and gone without a confirmed opening.
That gap between what got promised and what's actually walkable matters if you live here, because Blocktoberfest lands on Glenview Road on September 26 and you're going to want to know which storefronts will actually have their doors open by then.
The Four Names Everyone's Been Watching
In March, Village officials laid out a restaurant and mixed-use pipeline for downtown, backed by municipal grants and forgivable loans rather than left to the open market to sort out on its own. Four projects anchored that announcement: Zenzi Den, Spiro's Deli, The Foxtail at Glen View House, and Cerca, a 62-unit apartment building with ground-floor retail. Each had a target month attached. Two of the four are functioning close to plan. Two ran well past their original month, and one of those still hasn't posted a confirmed opening date as of this week.
What Actually Opened Close to Plan
Zenzi Den, tucked into 1822 Glenview Road, is the one that came closest to matching its own timeline. It's the second concept from Ballyhoo Hospitality, the group behind Jackman & Co. a few blocks away, and it leans into a modern izakaya format built around a robata grill fired with binchotan charcoal. The dining room mixes dark wood and charcoal stone floors, and there's a Tatami Room tucked behind the sushi counter, enclosed with shoji screens, for anyone who wants a quieter corner for a group dinner. The menu moves through sushi, dumplings, and small plates meant for sharing rather than single-serve ordering.
Cerca also landed close to its window. The 62-unit building is finished, and its first residents moved in during July, just a month past the original June target. That's a minor slip for a ground-up residential project. The retail half of the story is still developing. The Bagel, a name locals already associate with the original location, has signed a lease for the ground-floor space in Cerca, though no opening date has been announced yet.
The Restaurant That Opened This Week
The Foxtail at Glen View House is the headline story right now, and for good reason. It opened to the public on Aug. 20, following a Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting on Aug. 14. That's three months past the "May" target the Village put out in March, and the reason isn't hard to find once you know the building's history. The Glenview House at 1843 Glenview Road had sat vacant since March 2023, and it's 146 years old. Foxtail's renovation wasn't a simple tenant fit-out. It included interior remodeling, a new outdoor dining enclosure, and a two-story enclosed porch added at the rear, all while keeping the historic facade intact. That kind of work runs on its own clock, not the one printed in a press release.
What you get for the wait is a genuinely full menu. Foxtail describes its food as Mediterranean-inspired with coastal influences, and the details back that up. Starters include hummus, labneh, and muhammara served together as the Fox Trio, alongside roasted cauliflower, kefta kabob, grilled octopus, lobster dynamite, and chicken shawarma rolls. There's a raw bar with oysters, tuna and hamachi crudo, lobster maki, and poke bowls. Main courses run from beef shawarma and seared branzino to a Foxtail paella built with orzo, chicken, andouille sausage, shrimp, mussels, clams, and scallops, plus filet mignon and a 20-ounce bone-in ribeye for anyone who wants Mediterranean flavors with a steakhouse-sized cut. It's the third Foxtail location, following the original in Downers Grove and Foxtail on the Lake in Des Plaines, and the owners have talked openly about wanting to bring that same following closer to the North Shore.
Where Spiro's Actually Stands
This is the one worth watching closest before Blocktoberfest. Spiro's Deli has been a Glenview fixture since 1962, most recently at 1210 Waukegan Road, and its move to the northeast corner of Glenview Road and Lehigh Avenue was originally slated for April. As of the Village's most recent project update, final interior work was still progressing, with parking lot paving and the new patio nearly finished, and the target had shifted to mid-August. That window has already passed without a confirmed opening announcement. The menu itself isn't changing much, longtime staples like The Bomber, chicken pita, Italian beef, gyros, burgers, and hot dogs are all staying, and hours are expanding to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily once the doors open. If you've been planning a stop there before the festival, it's worth checking the storefront in person rather than assuming the calendar has caught up to the announcement.
The Full Lineup, One Year Later
Zoom out past the four headline projects and downtown Glenview has added more than most residents probably realize over the last thirteen months:

What This Means for September 26
Blocktoberfest returns to Glenview Road, between Church and Pine streets, on Sept. 26, running from late morning into the evening with Los Lobos headlining a lineup that also includes Altered Five Blues Band, Beyond the Blonde, and Zydeco Voodoo. It's the kind of event that pulls in well over 15,000 people, and it lands about five weeks after Foxtail's opening week, giving the newest anchor tenant enough runway to settle in before the biggest single night downtown sees all year.
